This page says what The Macro Notebook stores about you, why, and who else sees it. You can read the whole site without an account. If you sign in, we keep your email address and the articles you save. We do not sell data, show advertising or follow you around the web.
Who runs this site
The Macro Notebook is run by its owner, who decides what the site stores and is responsible for it. Write to hello@macronotebook.com about anything on this page.
When you read the site
You do not need an account to read anything. We count page views with Vercel Web Analytics and measure page speed with Vercel Speed Insights. Neither sets a cookie; they tell us which pages people read, not who read them. The fonts come from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address to Google when it loads them.
What we store when you sign in
- Your email address.
- The date you signed up and the date you last signed in.
- The date of the Terms you accepted, and when you accepted them.
- Your answer to the email question (yes, no or not yet), and when you gave it.
When you ask for a sign-in link, we also keep a record of the request: your email address, your IP address, the page you were on and the time. We use it to stop misuse of the sign-in form. Records older than two days are deleted each time anyone asks for a sign-in link.
We use this data to run the account you asked for. For other emails we rely on your consent, which you can take back at any time.
What we store when you save an article
Which article you saved, and when. Nobody else sees your list. The owner sees how many times each article was saved and how many articles each reader saved, but not which reader saved which article. Save counts are not shown on the site.
Emails we send
- Sign-in links, when you ask for one.
- Other emails from The Macro Notebook, such as the weekly email when it starts, only if you said yes. You can change your answer on your Saved page, and every such email will have an unsubscribe link.
Who can see your data
The owner, on a private admin page. Nobody else at The Macro Notebook.
Who else handles your data
These companies handle data for us, and only to run the site:
- Vercel hosts the site and runs the sign-in.
- Neon stores the account database.
- Resend sends the emails.
- Google Fonts serves the fonts.
They may process data outside your country, including in the United States.
Cookies and local storage
The site sets one cookie, and only when you sign in: __Host-mnb_session. It keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. It is strictly necessary for the account you asked for, so the site does not ask for your consent to it. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and no cookie banner.
The site also keeps a few small notes in your browser's local storage: your theme (Paper or Terminal); whether you were signed in on your last visit, so the page shows the right button at once; and when you last visited and which recent stories you opened, so the section tabs can count the stories that are new to you. They never leave your browser.
Your data, your choice
You can delete your account at any time with "Delete my account" on your Saved page. That deletes your email address, your answers and your saved articles at once. You can also write to hello@macronotebook.com to ask for a copy of your data, to correct it or to delete it. If you live in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
Changes to this page
The date at the top shows the last change. If a change matters, signed-in readers see a notice and are asked to agree before they go on using their account.
